🎙️ Introduction

In our previous lesson, we learned what a noun is.

في الدرس السابق تعلمنا أن الاسم (Noun) هو كلمة تُستخدم لتسمية شخص أو مكان أو حيوان أو شيء أو فكرة.

But did you know that nouns can perform different jobs in a sentence?

لكن هل تعلم أن الاسم يمكن أن يؤدي وظائف مختلفة داخل الجملة؟

Today, we'll learn the main functions of nouns in English sentences.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

1️⃣ Nouns as Subjects

الاسم كفاعل (Subject)

The subject is the person or thing that performs the action.

الفاعل هو الشخص أو الشيء الذي يقوم بالفعل.

Examples:

✅ The students are reading quietly.

Who is reading?

👉 The students

Subject = students

✅ My photos didn't come out clearly.

Subject = photos

✅ Mum and Dad get up at 6 a.m.

Subject = Mum and Dad

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

2️⃣ Nouns as Objects

الاسم كمفعول به (Object)

The object receives the action.

المفعول به هو الذي يقع عليه الفعل.

Examples:

✅ Have you fed the cat?

Object = cat

✅ Please don't interrupt the speaker.

Object = speaker

✅ Did you enjoy that movie?

Object = movie

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

3️⃣ Nouns as Objects of a Preposition

الاسم بعد حرف الجر

A noun can come after a preposition.

يمكن أن يأتي الاسم بعد حرف الجر.

Examples:

✅ I walked into the sitting room.

Preposition = into

Object of preposition = room

✅ He was working at his desk.

Preposition = at

Object of preposition = desk

✅ You're standing on my toe.

Preposition = on

Object of preposition = toe

💡 Remember:

After a preposition, there is usually a noun or pronoun.

بعد حرف الجر غالباً يأتي اسم أو ضمير.

4️⃣ Nouns as Complements After Linking Verbs

الاسم كخبر بعد أفعال الربط

Linking verbs connect the subject to more information.

أفعال الربط تربط الفاعل بمعلومة إضافية.

Common linking verbs:

✔ be
✔ become
✔ seem

Examples:

✅ I became an actress.

Complement = actress

✅ Are you a doctor?

Complement = doctor

✅ I feel a fool.

Complement = fool

In these sentences, the noun describes the subject.

في هذه الجمل الاسم يصف الفاعل.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

5️⃣ Nouns as Object Complements

الاسم كمكمل للمفعول به

Sometimes a noun gives extra information about the object.

أحياناً يأتي الاسم ليعطي معلومات إضافية عن المفعول به.

Examples:

✅ She called me a fool.

Object = me

Object Complement = fool

✅ We elected her captain.

Object = her

Object Complement = captain

✅ The judges voted James the winner.

Object = James

Object Complement = winner

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

6️⃣ Nouns Used as Adjectives

الاسم المستخدم كصفة

Sometimes a noun describes another noun.

في اللغة الإنجليزية يمكن أن يُستخدم الاسم لوصف اسم آخر.

Examples:

✅ school curriculum

School describes curriculum.

✅ Internet search

Internet describes search.

✅ coffee stains

Coffee describes stains.

✅ rain clouds

Rain describes clouds.

Although the first word is a noun, it works like an adjective.

رغم أن الكلمة الأولى اسم، فإنها تعمل كصفة.
